Meet Our President

L. Oveta Glover

"You listen, You learn, You teach, You love”.

A child was born on February 6 in Charleston, S.C., Ms. L. Oveta Glover is the second daughter among six offsprings of the late Rev. Dr. Benjamin J. and Mrs. Lydia W. Glover. Currently residing in Columbia, S.C., she holds a significant place in history as one of the eleven trailblazers who integrated the public schools of Charleston in 1963, a groundbreaking achievement for the state of South Carolina, earning her comparison to Louisiana’s Ruby Bridges.  Ms. Glover later moved to Columbia, where she graduated from C.A. Johnson High School and pursued higher education at Wilberforce University in Xenia, Ohio. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Early Childhood Education from Benedict College in Columbia, S.C.    In recognition of her contributions, Ecumenical University, Columbia S.C. awarded her an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree.

Ms. Glover’s lifelong dedication to service and leadership has earned her numerous accolades. Among her honors are the "Key to the City" of Charleston for her role in integrating the public school system and a city proclamation designating February 21 as "School Access Toward Equity Day." She was recognized as a U.S. Congressional "S.C. Civil Rights Luminaire 2016" by Congressman James E. Clyburn and received the 2017 Church Women United Columbia Human Rights Distinguished Leadership Award. Other accolades include the 2018 PALSS Community Partner Award, the "Key to the City" of Columbia in 2019 with a proclamation naming September 19 "L. Oveta Glover Day," and the 2022 National Coalition of 100 Black Women "Distinguished My Sister’s Keeper" Award.

Remaining dedicated to her community, Ms. Glover is the founder and president of F.U.N.D.S., Inc. (Friends United as a Neighborhood Developmental Society, Inc.), a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization established in 1997. The organization advocates for awareness of the devastating diseases of Diabetes and Hepatitis C and pioneered the Annual Statewide Black History Parade and Festival. She is a life member of the NAACP, currently serving a fourth term as the Columbia SC Branch President and is affiliated with organizations such as the National Council of Negro Women as a life member and the S.C. Federation of Women and Youth Clubs, among others.

Retiring after employment at three of the state’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs)—Allen University, Benedict College, and Voorhees University—Ms. Glover is a true advocate for giving back. She has left an enduring impact as an educator in the public-school systems of Columbia and Charleston, S.C.  Returning to Charleston in 1982, she founded "Lady Teens, Inc.," an organization dedicated to encouraging young ladies "to listen, learn, teach, and love," providing them with hope and experiences to navigate societal integration. Upon returning to Columbia, S.C., Ms. Glover ventured into entrepreneurship in the restaurant and lounge business, expressing her love for entertaining and her belief that "a smile will always make another person smile."  Guided by her motto, "You listen, You learn, You teach, You love," Ms. L. Oveta Glover continues to inspire and contribute to her community, leaving an enduring legacy of service, leadership, and empowerment.
